Rare Oil by Royal favourite Edward Seago could make up to £30,000

A scarce 1953 oil on canvas by Edward Seago that shows Piccadilly and the Ritz Hotel at Coronation time, is to be auctioned at Lawrences of Crewkerne on October 12th with estimate of £20,000-30,000

The oil on canvas was painted by Edward Seago (1910-1974), who was selected as an official artist for the Coronation in 1953 because of Queen Elizabeth’s fondness for his work.

Duke’s of Dorchester are delighted to be handling a private collection of over thirty works by artist Edward D’Arcy Lister A.R.C.A. painted during his life in Dorset. Lister was born in 1911 in Horsforth, Leeds, he studied at Leeds College of Art between 1928-33 and at the Royal College of Art under Gilbert Spencer between 1933-37. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and also in the Provinces.

Tennants’ auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on 25th February achieved strong results, with many works selling for high above their estimates. The saleroom was packed, and with busy phone lines and nearly 250 registered online bidders, competition was fierce for the top lots. Attracting the bidders was a sale that combined a number of good academic private collections, which garnered specialist interest, and strong commercial works that appealed to a broader spectrum of buyers.
