De Vreugde Design & Collectables

De Vreugde Design & Collectables started in 1999 as a small shop in Amsterdam, and in fact was one of the very first vintage design shops in the Netherlands! Today they have grown to be an international dealer with loyal clients from all over the world. Jan Willem and Soraya van de Vreugde started their company in the Jordaan district, one of the oldest areas of Amsterdam, and now have a 1,500m2 warehouse in the village of Wilnis, just outside of Amsterdam. The warehouse is filled with vintage design furniture and lighting that can be found on their website, but it’s also worth a visit since their inventory is always expanding, and they’re only a 20 minute drive from Amsterdam and Utrecht. If you’re a dealer interested in wholesale, they can help with that too, as well as the shipping, so contact them for more information. We love this 1950s ‘Cleopatra’ sofa that they currently have for sale, which is designed by Geoffrey Harcourt and produced by Artifort.

They also have a gallery - Galerie Gaudium, in the heart of Amsterdam and their latest exhibition is called 'Lovely Legs', and they tell us about the exhibition here:

"Godfried Bomans once said about Marlene Dietrich’s legs: “If my wife had only one such leg…” We would like to give you the opportunity to admire legs. As unique elements of vintage design, or through the art by Els Mulder. Follow us in a journey through contemporary art and mid-century design.

In the mid 20th century, there was a lot of experimenting with shapes and colours in furniture design. This often shows in the base and has led to a colourful collection of beautifully shaped, eye-catching legs that we’d happily like to show you. Our Galerie is filled with rare, unique pieces that you won’t likely find again. The Bellevue Chair by André Bloc has a beautiful elegant leg structure, the coffee table by Knut Hesterberg was inspired by the motion of a propeller, and we have many more pieces with stories like this.

All of this is complimented by the lovely paintings by Dutch artist Els Mulder. She is a passionate dancer, which explains her fascination for legs and shoes. She grew up in an artistic family and was educated at the Royal Academy for Art and Design in The Hague, NL. The “Legs” represents an ongoing theme in her work and we proudly exhibit a selection of this. Colourful paintings of legs, placed in alienated environments to create a unique, captivating picture.

The gallery is open on Friday and Saturday from 13:00 to 18:00h. Visit us and be inspired by the versatility and beauty that our lovely legs have to offer!"
