Brussels Design Market - 23rd -24th March 2019

This market was founded 15 years ago, and this March celebrates its 26th edition.

Starting its days as a fleamarket devoted primarily to products from the 50s to the early 80s, today Brussels Design Market is anything but, and is considered to be one of the best events in Europe dedicated to 20th century design. Held twice a year, in March and September, the event welcomes somewhere in the region of 100 exhibitors and over 7,000 visitors to its exceptional location: Sheds 3 and 4 of Tour & Taxis – home to Belgian’s largest cultural events, shows and fairs.

The two ‘sheds’ are really nothing like sheds as we know them – they’d be best described as industrial buildings, with bags of original character. Built in the early 20th century, they were used for merchandise in transit, and today you enter the show from the old platforms alongside, where trains originally deposited their goods. The buildings are large, bright and airy due to the lofty ceilings and sawtooth roof, which evenly spreads natural light across the venue. Inside, the brick walls are painted white, and steel riveted beams are reminders of its previous purpose – what a great backdrop for Modern design!

What is there to buy?
Over the years, the selection of merchandise exhibited has increased. Arriving from all over Europe, the dealers present an eclectic mix, bringing together multiple styles and trends that have impacted the 20th century.

Visitors discover original and iconic pieces of Italian, French, American, and Scandinavian design created by the biggest names in design history, such as Sottsass, Le Corbusier, Eames, Jacobsen and Panton. Alongside these icons, the Brussels Design Market also offers anonymous and exclusive design pieces at affordable prices.

It’s an unusual show in that on one hand it maintains a unique atmosphere where the Market Shed offers a ‘brocante’ feel with stands defined by simple markings on the floor. The Expo Shed however, has more of a lounge feel, with inspiring room settings and fitted booths. This combination offers visitors a great deal of choice, and is the reason why it will continue to attract more and more visitors year on year. This is a great rendezvous for design lovers and professionals, dealers and collectors.
